Donald Arthur was raised in Anchorage and Palmer, Alaska. His motivation in the fisheries field stems from countless weekends throughout his adolescence fly-fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char on the renowned Kenai River. After graduating from Palmer High School, Donald traveled east to New York to attend the State University of New York: College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, New York. While at SUNY-ESF, Donald served as president of the conservation-based fly-fishing club, The ESF Troutbums. It is at SUNY-ESF that Donald developed his passion for aquatic entomology and oceanography thanks to his inspirations, Dr. Neil Ringler and Dr. David Kieber, respectively. In December 2014, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aquatic and Fisheries Science with a minor in Marine Science. Shortly prior to his graduation, Donald was hired by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) as technician for the Division of Sportfish. Since then, he has acted as a lead instructor for many of the Aquatic Education events directed towards youth in Anchorage, Alaska. In his first year with ADF&G, Donald assisted with the operation of floating weirs in Western Cook Inlet to estimate escapement of Chinook salmon. Each year since, he has served as crew lead for foot stream surveys to estimate Chinook and coho salmon escapement on Anchorage and North Gulf Coast Management Area Streams. He has worked extensively on a research project estimating re-submergent survival rates of rockfish (Sebastes sp.) exposed to barotrauma in Prince William Sound. Most recently he has helped develop a new protocol for the assessment of stocked lakes in the Anchorage Management Area. Donald prides himself on his diverse knowledge in both the freshwater and marine environments. He looks forward to using this knowledge and experience to develop his project pertaining to rockfish in the Gulf of Alaska.
